Charlotte plays spoiler in first qualifier
Coggins scores lone goal for defending champs
The 2005 USL-2 M.V.P. Jacob Coggins wasted no time putting himself in the running for a second straight award. 24 minutes into the Charlotte Eagles’ season opener, he scored the game’s only goal as the defending champions knocked off the Cincinnati Kings 1-0. Although the Eagles are glad to win their season opener at home, the victory meant little from an Open Cup perspective because Charlotte has already qualified for this year’s tournament as last year’s league champs.

The win hurts the Kings as they try to qualify for the second year in a row. Cincinnati has a chance to bounce back on Sunday against the Richmond Kickers.
