Gauchos hurt Seals' chances
San Diego knocks off San Fran 1-0 on Thursday
The San Diego Gauchos picked up their first win of the 2006 season against the San Francisco Seals, 1-0. The Gauchos, who are already eliminated from contention with two losses, only needed a single goal to give the Seals their first loss of the year. With one loss, the result hurts the chances of the Seals qualifying for the Open Cup, a tournament that helped them make a name for themselves in American soccer history.
San Francisco will need some help if they want to qualify for the tournament. The good news for Seal fans is that there are two games remaining and there are only four unbeaten teams remaining in the Western Conference. Two of them (Los Angeles and Bakersfield) will play each other this weekend. Western Conference qualifying will likely come down to the final weekend when San Francisco will square off against currently unbeaten Bakersfield in their final qualifying match. Also, the Orange County/Los Angeles game that weekend could decide the Western representative.
