Semifinals

Playing in front of 10,000 fans at Coats Field in Pawtucket, Fore River

gained a spot in the National Challenge Cup Final, defeating Robins Dry

Dock 2-1. Robins had the run of play in the early going, and came inches

from taking the lead. A shot from McGuire struck the cross bar, another

from Harry Ratican caromed off a goalpost, and Jimmie Lambie saved a

good shot from Garside. After fine shot from Jack Kershaw was saved by

Robins' Pete Renzulli, the Dry Dock eleven won a corner kick at the other

end. Littlejohn delivered the corner, and Ratican put the pass away to

give Robins a 1-0 lead.

A few minutes later, Fore River took charge and begin to assemble their

own offensive charge, leading to the tying goal. James Farquhar sent a cross

to Tommy Underwood, who slipped it past Renzulli, drawing the game level

and sending the Pawtucket crowd into a frenzy. Farquhar also played a part in the

winning goal, passing to Robertson, who then connected with Daly, who found

Jack Kershaw. Kershaw beat a Robins defender and sent the ball past Renzuli

for the winning goal. The Robins team protested that Kershaw was offside,

but the referee denied their pleads.

Mounted police were needed to clear the field of excited spectators, most from

Boston and Fore River's base of Quincy. The Royal Rooters, with their 40-piece

brass and pipe band, paraded through the city towards the railway station, with

Quincy Mayor Whiton leading the way.

At Federal League Ballpark in St. Louis, the Ben Miller A.C. defeated

Detroit's Packard F.C. 4-2, to advance to the National Challenge Cup

Final against Fore River. The home club struck first, when Rube Potee

converted a penalty kick, which was awarded for a Packard handball foul.

Ben Miller widened it's lead minutes later, when Larry Riley scored from a

difficult angle. With just five minutes left in the first half, Packard scored

twice, leaving the game tied at halftime. Bob Mercer sent a hard shot on

goal, which bounced off the chest of Miller defender Johnson, and fell into

the goal. Two minutes later, John Hunter scored to tie things a 2 apiece.

Twenty minutes into the second half, Hunter netted his second goal of the

match, and Potee added his second shortly afterwards. Ben Miller held on to

the lead comfortably, and were never seriously threatened by Packard the

rest of the way.
