On a playing field covered with ice and mud, J & P Coats slugged their
way to a 1-0 victory over Abbot Worsted, moving on the National
Challenge Cup Eastern Final. The condition of the field prevented any
kind of normal play, and at the 27th minute, the lone goal of the game
was scored. Tommy Fleming sent a pass to Gilmore, who avoided two
Worsted defenders, sending a centering pass in into the penalty area.
Morley missed the pass, but James Gallagher was there to back him up,
driving a hard shot past Davidson. Later in the half, Parker looked to
have the game tied for Worsted, but referee Cunningham blew his whistle
for offside. In the final quarter-hour, Worsted were given plenty of
opportunities to tie the game, but were unable to convert in the muck.

In less then ideal conditions at Harrison Field, the Paterson Silk Sox
and New York Field Club played to a 0-0 draw, forcing a replay the
following week. Already delayed considerably by rough winter weather
in the East, the field was in poor shape. Once corner was covered in
water, and the goal in that end was mired in mud. New York looked to
have taken a 1-0 lead early in the first half, but referee W.R. Welch
ruled that Archie Stark was offside when he scored. Soon after,
Paterson's Scott delivered a hard foul to Hardy, who had to be carried
off the field. Edward McAusian took exception to this, and began
scuffling with Scott, forcing the Harrison police to calm the situation
on the field and keep it from escalating. Once order was restored,
Welch ordered both men out of the game.
Hardy managed to come back at the start of the second half to keep
the sides even (remember, there was no substitutions back then).
A shot from Paterson had inadvertently struck the arm of William Philip,
and a penalty kick was awarded. Bill Fryer stepped to the spot for the
kick, but Bobby Geudert saved the penalty and kept Paterson scoreless.
The match officials decided that due to the condition of the field, extra
time would not be played, and instead a replay would be contested
next week.

The Paterson Silk Sox advanced to the Eastern Final of the National
Challenge Cup, defeating New York Field Club 4-1 at Harrison Field
in a replay of last weeks 0-0 draw. An early goal for New York by
Mitchell was nullified due to offside. at the fifteen minute mark,
Paterson took a 1-0 lead on a goal from Tommy Duggan. New York
won a series of corner kick, but were either cleared away of missed
the target.
In the second half, New York continued to win corners, but it was
on a breakaway in the 60th minute that Paterson doubled their
lead, Duggan scoring his second goal. Paterson's advantage increased
to 3-0, after Charlie Kelly fouled Frank McKenna in the box, and
Paterson were awarded a penalty kick, which Bill Fryer converted.
New York got a consolation goal with ten minutes remaining, through
William Philip, and Paterson ended any hope of a comeback with
Joseph Irvine's goal five minutes from full time.

the Brickies lead, but sent the ball sailing over the crossbar while
