Semifinals

In front of 9,000 fans at Harrison Field, the Paterson Silk Sox advanced to

the National Challenge Cup Final with a thrilling 3-2 come from behind victory

over J & P Coats. After both clubs took turns testing the others defense, Coats

scored the first goal; after fifteen minutes. After  foul by Jack McGuire, Tommy

Fleming took the ball up the wing and sent a centering pass to William Neilson,

who beat Pete Renzulli for a 1-0 lead. After another period of back and forth play,

Coats struck once again through Neilson five minutes before halftime.

Coats continued to pressure early in the second half, with Fleming just missing

with a good shot. The momentum would quickly shift Paterson's way, however. In

the 55th minute, Tommy Duggan made the game 2-1, stooping low to head in a

pass from Joseph Irvine. Twenty minutes later, Duggan struck again to tie the score.

Off of a corner kick, Irvine connected with Duggan yet again, who drove the ball past

Schofield. Just five minutes later, it was Irvine himself doing the honors, placing his

shot in the upper corner of the goal to finally grab the lead for Paterson.

Scullin Steel booked their return to the National Challenge Cup Final,

defeating Arden F.C. in the Western Final, 2-1. Johnny Jaap gave Arden

a 1-0 lead in the first half. After a weak clearance by Scullin goalkeeper

Oellerman, Jaaap booted the ball into the far corner of the goal. Scullin

came out strong in the second half, and sensational play by goalkeeper

Boyle, and left back Murphy, allowed Arden to hold their lead. Arden

caught a temporary break when Scull fullback Bentley was forced to

leave the field for a moment. When Bentley returned twenty minutes

later, Scullin regained their momentum from earlier, and capitalized.

Schwartz sent a cross into the goalmouth, where Mulvey's shot bounded

off the crossbar. Three Scullin players crowded the ball into the net, with

Mulvey gaining credit for the goal. Shortly after, Scullin took the lead for

good. Brannigan kept a long pass from Bechtold from going past the touch

line, and proceeded to pass to Schwarz, who drilled the ball past Boyle.
