In front of 15,000 fans at Harrison Field in Harrison, New Jersey,
the Paterson Silk Sox overcame a 2-0 deficit to tie Scullin Steel,
forcing a replay of the Final in a week.
Paterson pressed early, as Joseph Irvine struck an upright, and
Bill Fryer headed a corner kick over the bar. Paterson's Tommy
Duggan also sent a good shot just over the right corner of the
goal. Soon Scullin made offensive inroads of their own, forcing
Renzulli to make a few difficult saves. At the 38th minute, Scullin
broke the ice, as Brannigan caught Renzulli a bit too far out of his
goal, and put the ball away for a 1-0 halftime lead.
In the second period, Scullin kept their pressure up, and were
rewarded with a second goal. Allie Schwartz scored in the 57th
minute, off a pass from Rooney. Paterson wasted no time in
responding through Tommy Duggan eight minutes later. Paterson
kept up the pace, winning corner after corner, 21 in total. With
just six minutes remaining, John Heminsley netted the game winner,
after a pass from frank McKenna. Paterson continued their push,
winning more corner kicks, but Scullin held their attack at bay for the
remainder of normal time, and thirty minutes of extra time as well

The U.S.F.A. decided that the replay would be held in the East, and just two days
after the Final between Paterson and Scullin, the St. Louis club announced they
would not be able to field a team for the rematch. Oellerman, Brannigan, Mulvey and
Rooney had departed for baseball training camps. Had the replay been held in
St. Louis, they could have made the final, but a long trip back East was out of the
question. On top of this, Scullin players Nolan, Bechtold and Bentley were injured.
Instead of fielding an inferior team against Paterson, the Scullin management decided
the honorable way would be to relinquish their championship to Paterson.
