Qualifying Round

The Salinas Valley Samba made it 2-0 for USASA clubs Wednesday night, defeating the PDL’s Cascade Surge on penalties, after playing regulation and extra time to a 1-1 draw. The Samba advance to face NPSL West rivals Sonoma County Sol, in what will be a rematch of the USASA Region IV Open Cup championship played last month, won by Sonoma County on penalties after playing to a  1-1 draw.

Dallas based USASA side Roma defeated the PDL’s Cocoa Expos 7-2 on Wednesday night, marking the biggest defeat ever sufferd by a PDL club from a USASA side. Romq raced out to a quick 3-0 lead after only 24 minutes, on goals from Jamie Harrigan, Patrick Shamu and Juan Sastoque. In the 31st minute, Cocoa went a man down when MLS vet Ivan mcKinley was sent off for head-butting Roma player Mark Rowland. Shamu, an indoor soccer veteran with the Dallas Sidekicks, added another in the 38th minute to make it 4-0 Roma. Cocoa finally answered just before halftime on a goal from Janak Altidore. Right after the break, Juan Sastoque, who played with the Dallas Burn in 1997 & 1998, struck again to make it 5-1. James Phillips scored Cocoa’s only other goal a minute later, and Matt Williams added a goal to Jamie Harrigan’s second to finish the scoring at 7-2. Cocoa finshed the match three men down, after Altidore and Pere Marino were sent off for their second yellow each.
