The Kickers organization is on top of the world lately. Entering this week, the 1st Division Kickers are sitting at the top of the table, and the Kickers Future are in first place in the Mid-Atlantic Division. That hot streak continued as the Kickers Future dismissed the USASA’s Baltimore Colts FC 3-0. Dominic Oduro scored right before the halftime break and added another in the 62nd minute. A few minutes later, Christian Neagu put the game away with a goal of his own. The Kickers Future advance to the 2nd round to take on the Virginia Beach Mariners of the USL 1st Division.

The tournament’s biggest upset took place in the pouring rain in Indianapolis on Wednesday. The USASA’s Reggae Boyz had little trouble with the visiting Kings. Dave Beck and Moussa Zagnogo scored 2 goals a piece and led 4-0 after 70 minutes. The Kings made a late run with a goal each from Travis Sobers and George Kithas, but the Boyz held on for the tournament’s biggest upset so far. The Reggae Boyz will aim for another 2nd division scalp when they travel to Lusitano Stadium to take on the Western Mass Pioneers in Round 2.

Dallas-based club Roma, who thrashed the PDL Cocoa Expos 7-2 in the qualifying round, got by their Dallas area rivals, Azzurri FC, 5-2. Carl Bussey and Juan Sastoque added to their Open Cup goal totals, giving Roma a 2-0 after 35 minutes. Azzurri cut the lead in half just after the break, SMU standout Alex Smith scoring on a free kick from outside the box. The clubs then traded goals, ay Needham equalizing for Azzurri, and Matt Williams scoring for Roma to reclaim the lead. Roma never looked back at that point, adding goals from Mark Rowland and Jesus Rodriguez. The win marks only the second time since 1995 that more than one USASA club has advanced past the first round. Roma will now travel to play the Wilmington Hammerheads of the USL 2nd Division in the next round.

The Patriots held one of the highest scoring teams in the PDL in check, but needed an injury time goal by Daniel Frias to truly put the game away. Omar Mora opened the scoring in the 28th minute, and the Blue Star helped the Patriots cause by putting a ball in their own net in the 42nd minute. A minute later, Orange County’s Tyler Theslof pulled one back before the break. El Paso will host a 2nd Round match against the 2nd division’s Charlotte Eagles, another high-scoring USL club.

Samba got an injury time goal from David Frank to tie the game 1-1 and send the game into extra time. Just like the Des Moines/Pittsburgh game, both teams traded goals in extra time and had to decide the game at the penalty spot where Salinas Valley won 6-5 to become the third USASA team (Roma, Reggae Boyz) to advance to the 2nd round. The Samba win sets up the 2nd round’s biggest David & Goliath matchup as they will take on the USL 1st Division Seattle Sounders.
