Wednesday’s biggest upset took place in Des Moines, Iowa where the Menace claimed a First Division scalp by upsetting the First Division Charleston Battery 3-2. The Battery were last year’s Open Cup darlings, but it wasn’t meant to be in 2005. The Menace jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Tomas Boltnar and Edwin Disang in the opening 14 minutes. The Battery didn’t draw level until the second half when Greg Simmonds pulled one back in the 65th and Lazo Alavanja equalized in the 70th. Armin Mudjzic scored the game-winner for the Menace in the 80th minute and earned themselves a trip to Atlanta to take on the Silverbacks. Many fans would consider this the greatest win in Des Moines Menace history, and certainly the biggest upset.

In a battle of two high-powered offenses, one would think that a game like this would produce double-digit goals. Unfortunately for Patriots fans, the home team’s offense didn’t show up and Charlotte cruised to a 4-1 road win over El Paso. Patrick Daka scored in the 12th minute, and Chris Lemons added one just after halftime to give the visitors at 2-0 lead. Later, leading scoer Dustin Swinehart put the game away with two goals, one in the 71st, the other in the 77th. El Paso converted a penalty kick in the 90th minute to ruin the shutout, but the Eagles still move on to earn a date at home with the struggling Chivas USA. Chivas could be ripe for an upset, as they have only won 1 of their first 16 league matches.

One of the night’s biggest upsets came in Ocean City, NJ where the Barons of the PDL defeated the Second Division Rough Riders 4-0. Ruben Mingo, last year’s PDL MVP, opened the scoring in the 30th minute, but it was the second half where the Barons did the most damage. A trio of Temple Owls provided the scoring in half #2 with Tony Donatelli converting a 65th minute PK and then assisting on Adam Williamson’s (Lehigh) goal three minutes later. Finally, Ryan Heins (Temple) set up Steven Wacker (Temple) for the fourth goal of the game in the 70th. In the Third Round, Ocean City will travel to Richmond to take on the Kickers, who currently sit on top of the USL First Division table.

Dallas-based club Roma, who had scored 12 goals in their first two Open Cup games, were held scoreless on the road in Wilmington. The Hammerheads got off to a quick start, scoring 2 goals in the opening 12 minutes en route to a 5-0 win. James Gledhill scored 2 goals and assisted on another. In Round 3, FC Dallas will have revenge on their minds as they welcome the Hammerheads to the Lone Star State. In 2003, Wilmington hammered Dallas 4-1 on their way to a quarterfinal appearance where they eventually fell to DC United 1-0.

Who will be the Charleston Battery of 2005? It might be the Virginia Beach Mariners. Last year, despite sitting toward the bottom of the table all season, the Battery made a run all the way to the semi-finals. This year, it’s the Mariners who are sitting two points clear of the bottom of the First Division table, but seem to be using new ownership to motivate them. They began their 2005 Open Cup run with a convincing 3-0 win over the Richmond Kickers Future. The Mariners got 2 goals in the opening 24 minutes from David Castellanos and Darren Caskey. However, shortly before halftime, Castellanos was sent off, leaving the Mariners to defend a 2-0 lead in the 2nd half with 10-men. They managed with a man down, and Timothy O’Niell scored in the 74th minute to ice it for the home team. The win sets up a 3rd Round matchup on the road against First Division rival Rochester.

One of the worst ways to lose a tournament game is by an own goal, and that’s what happened to the Chicago Fire Premier on Wednesday. The game was scoreless until the 62nd minute when Johnny Menyonger broke the goal draught. Minnesota added another in the 89th minute when a ball deflected off the post and then bounced off the back of a Fire defender and into his own net. Less than a minute later, Brandon Moss pulled one back for Chicago, but it was too late. Minnesota advances and will get a chance to knock off Real Salt Lake in front of their home crowd on July 13th.

At the end of the evening, Salinas Valley remained as the only hope for the USASA to be represented in the 3rd round. However, the Samba fell short against Seattle 3-1, failing in their attempt to become only the second USASA team to advance to the 3rd round in the modern era. There was hope on the Samba sideline when Adam Smarte put Salinas Valley up 1-0 after 51 minutes. Their hopes were quickly dashed thanks to Brett Whitfield, who entered the game at halftime. Whitfield accounted for all three Sounder goals, scoring two and assisting on another. The win sets up a huge rivalry game between Seattle and fellow Pacific Northwest side Portland Timbers at PGE Park July 13th.
