Third Round (Pt. 1)

The Portland Timbers opened the 3rd round with a hard fought 2-0 win over the Seattle Sounders. With the win, the Timbers move on to host the San Jose Earthquakes of Major League Soccer on August 3rd. Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar’s free kick in the 15th minute put the home team up early. The Timbers nearly went up by 2 before halftime, but an amazing save by Seattle keeper Preston Burpo kept the game close. After halftime, Dan Antoniuk converted a 59th minute penalty kick after Scot Thompson was taken down in the box.

The biggest blow for the Timbers came in the 78th minute when Byron Alvarez was shown his second yellow card and was sent off. This means that Alvarez, who is tied for the team lead in goals with 5, will not be available for the 4th round game against San Jose. Both goalkeepers were huge for their respective teams. Burpo made 5 saves, and Josh Saunders made 4 of his own. Seattle had their chances, but hit the woodwork twice. Most games between these two teams are very physical, and this game was no exception with Portland out-fouling Seattle 26-20.

Easily the biggest shock result of the third round took place in Atlanta on Wednesday.  PDL side Des Moines Menace cruised past the Atlanta Silverbacks by the score of 5-1. The Menace struck early and often, racing out to a 3-0 lead midway through the first half. Matthew Kreikemeier opened the scoring with a goal from Tomas Boltnar’s corner kick in the 10th minute. Four minutes later is was Boltnar scoring himself, this time on a penalty. Michael Kraus wrapped up the first half onslaught in the 26th minute, again from a Boltnar pass. Atlanta pulled a goal back in the 33rd minute from a David Hayes goal. Hayes was then sent off in first half stoppage time, reducing the Silverbacks to 10 men for the remainder of the match.  Des Moines put the game away with two goals in two minutes just after the second half kickoff. Kreikemeier assisted both Edwin Disang and Michael Krause in the 50th and 51st minute, clinching Des Moines’ second straight win over a USL First Division club in the cup. The Menace had beaten the Charleston Battery 3-2 in the second round. Des Moines will now make a trip to Overland Park, Kansas to take on the defending US Open Cup champion Kansas City Wizards on August 3.

In their debut US Open Cup game, Chivas USA showed a flair for the dramatic, drawing level with 7 minutes remaining in regulation time, then scoring the game winner in the final minute of extra time, to defeat the USL Second Division Charlotte Eagles 3-2. Esteban Arias opened the scoring after only three minutes, giving Chivas a 1-0 lead. Charlotte drew even when one half of their 1-2 scoring punch converted in the 23rd minute. Jacob Coggins split two defenders and sent a slow dribbler to creep it’s way over the goalline to a 1-1 scoreline. Eagles goalkeeper Chris McClennan kept his club in the game with one diving save after another, leading one of the Chivas assistant coaches to wonder why he wasn’t playing in MLS. With ten minutes to go, Dustin Swinehart gave the Eagles a 2-1 lead, lofting a shot over Brad Guzan’s head and bouncing into the net. In the 82rd minute, McClellan made what appeared to be the save of the game, sliding to block the ball with his legs on a shot from Thiago Martins, but Martins scored a minute later to draw the game even at 2. After 30 minutes of extra time, the match appeared headed for penalties, but Isaac Romo gave Chivas their first-ever U.S. Open Cup win in dramatic fashon, scoring in the final seconds of overtime. This sets up another Los Angeles derby between Chivas and the Los Angeles Galaxy in the Fourth Round of the U.S. Open Cup.

FC Dallas made sure history did not repeat itself against the Wilmington Hammerheads, although they needed extra time to make sure.  In 2003, Wilmington pulled off on of the most stunning upsets in recent Open Cup history, thrashing Dallas (who were known as the "Burn" then) 4-1. The Hammerheads looked like they were about to repeat history, as Derek Popovich beat Dallas ’keeper Jeff Cassar with a powerful shot into the bottom right of the net. Wilmington seemed to hold control of the game for the first thirty minutes, but Dallas came to life and evened things up in the 35th minute, when rookie Abe Thompson collected a rebound from a Carey Talley shot. Dallas took control of the match in the second half, not allowing the Hammerheads a single shot, but the Wilmington side held Dallas at bay as well, sending the match into extra time. Extra time became the Roberto Mina show. In the 98th minute, Mina delivered a pass to the head of Talley to give Dallas a 2-1 lead. Not content to sit back and defend the lead, Mina scored by himself in the 112th minute, chipping in a goal that beat Wilmington goalkeeper Bart Creasman, sealing FC Dallas’s 3-1 victory. FC Dallas will travel to Columbus to face the Crew on August 3.
