In a battle of USL First Division clubs, Rochester overcame a 1-0 deficit at halftime to prevail 2-1. Steve Shak nearly gave Virginia Beach an early lead, hitting the crossbar off of John Barry Nusum’s pass at the top of the penalty area. Nusum put the Mariners ahead himself, beating Rhinos’ goalkeeper Scott Vallow with a low shot to the right of the goal. Rochester upped the pressure in the second half, and were immediately rewarded with a penalty in the 50th minute, which Rene Rivas converted to draw the game level. Kirk Wilson eased any fear of an inter-league upset, heading home a Mauro Carabajal pass with ten minutes remaining. The Rhinos will host the MetroStars at Frontier Field in the Fourth Round.

The Chicago Fire were the lone MLS side to not need extra time to put away their lower-division rivals, defeating the USL Second Division Western MAss Pioneers 3-1 at Lusitano Stadium. The Pioneers did strike first however, as Neil Krause tapped in the rebound of a shot from Omar McFarlane, giving Western Mass a 1-0 lead after only five minutes. Chicago answered quickly though, as Will John scored on a tap-in of his own, this time off a corner taken by Justin Mapp at the 16 minute mark. The Fire took the lead for good eight minutes later, this time John providing the assist to Lubos Reiter on a first-time volley past Pioneers netminder Bryan O’Quinn. Play turned a bit chippy soon after, as both teams engaged in some pushing and shoving at midfield after a rough foul from Western Mass, and the Pioneers’ Anthony Agustine was booked two minutes later for a hard foul on Mapp. The Fire scored the final goal deep in the stoppage time in the first half, playing a sort of "reverse" offside trap. The Western mass defenders thought a clearance out of the Fire defensive third would be whistled dead for offside, but Reiter hustled back to an onside position, and Mapp collected the ball, passing to John for his second goal of the game. Chicago will come right back to Lusitano Stadium on August 3, this time to play fellow MLS club New England Revolution.

10 goals, extra time, home team pulls off the upset, what more can you ask from a US Open Cup match? The USL First Division Minnesota Thunder outlasted MLS expansion club Real Salt Lake in an extra time slugfest, 6-4. In what was a recurring theme for the night, a goal was scored in the first ten minutes, this time it was Real’s Jason Kries converting from the spot after nine minutes. Minnesota answered back quickly, Johnny Menyongar and Melvin Tarley scoring in the 16th and 17th minutes. Jamie Watson finished the first half scoring, pulling Salt Lake level 2-2 in the 38th minute. The clubs traded goals sixteen minutes apart early in the second half, Jason Kries and Malvin Tarley both netting their second goals of the match, in the 50th and 66th minute respectively. Kries collected a hat trick in the 70th minute, giving Real a 4-3 lead, but Aaron Paye came to the rescue for the Thunder late in regulation. He scored in the 88th minute to tie the game and send it into extra time. Six minutes into extra time, Matt Schmidt rocketed a hard shot at the top of the penalty area, past RSL ’keeper Jay Nolly, to claim a 5-4 lead. Paye put the final nail in the coffin, scoring on a breakaway in the 107th minute for a dramatic 6-4 Thunder win. With the win, Minnesota will host the Colorado Rapids from Major League Soccer on August 3.

After a two hour delay due to lightning, the match between the Kickers and Barons has been re-scheduled for Tuesday, July 19, at 7:00 pm. Richmond officials lobbied to play the match on July 14, but Ocean City cited upcoming back to back games on their PDL schedule this weekend as reason to play the match next week. This is the second year in a row a Baron’s Open Cup match has been postponed due to severe weather. Last season, the Barons match vs. Syracuse Salty Dogs was called off in the second half due to lightning, with the score 1-1. Syracuse prevailed in the rescheduled game, 4-2.
When the 3rd round "opening acts" include 3 overtime games, a 10-goal thriller, a 120th minute game-winning goal, a PDL shocker and a 10-man comeback, it’s hard to come up with an encore. Somehow, Ocean City and Richmond managed to do that with the Kickers winning 8-4 in front of their home fans at Sports Backers Stadium. The two teams made US Open Cup modern era history by scoring 12 goals on Tuesday night.
McColm Cephas scored a 1st half hat trick and Sascha Gorres assisted on four tallies to lead the way for the Kickers on a night where defense was an after thought. With the win, the Kickers earn themselves a home match against defending MLS champion DC United on August 3rd.
