The Rhinos showed why they have been one of the more successful USL clubs in the Open Cup, defeating the MetroStars 3-1 at Frontier Field. The Rhinos opened the scoring in the 20th minute, on Scott Palguta’s header, which was passed to him by two headers from Tenywa Bonsue and Kirk Wilson. Rochester doubled their score ten minutes later, as Mauro Carabajal finished a 30-yard run by slapping a shot off the hand of Metro ’keeper Zach Wells. A foul on Carabajal lead to the Rhinos final goal, when he was brought down by Seth Stemmler in the penalty area, resulting in a spot kick that was converted by Rene Rivas in the 57th minute. The Metros pulled back a consolation goal, on Sergio Galvan Rey’s header off of a corner kick, but by then there was little doubt in the result. The Rhinos will now face the Chicago Fire at Frontier Field in the Quarterfinals on August 24.
