Quarterfinals

Rochester nearly added another MLS scalp to the walls of Frontier Field, falling to the Chicago Fire on penalties, after finishing 120 minutes of play drawn at 1-1. The Fire nearly took a 1-0 lead after 17 minutes, when Ivan Guerreros’ shot from a Thiago though ball sailed inches over the crossbar. Samuel Caballero opened the books for Chicago in the 34th minute, rising above he crowd in the penalty box to head home a Chris Armas free kick. Rochester came out firing in the second half, with three corner kicks in the first five minutes, though they came away with nothing to show. The Rhinos finally broke though in the 60th minute, as Greg Howes found Doug Miller with a pass near midfield, slotting a shot to the left of an oncoming Zach Thornton for the equalizer. The posts maintained the draw for Chicago soon after, as Greg Howes and Scott Palguta both hit the woodwork for Rochester. At the start of the second period of extra time, Rochester appeared to have taken the lead, but Greg Howes goal was disallowed by an offside call. In the penalty session, the only player to miss was Jonathan Bolanos, and that was enough to give the Fire a date with FC Dallas in the semifinals.

Cup holders Kansas City Wizards crashed from the competition with a 3-1 shock defeat at home to the Minnesota Thunder of the USL First Division. Seemingly repeating a similar run by the Charleston Battery the year before, Minnesota advanced to the semifinals despite a lackluster performance in league play. Thunder veteran Johnny Menyongar put his club in the lead 11 minutes from halftime, blasting a 16-yard drive past Wizards goalkeeper Will Hesmer. The goal seemed to jump star the MLS club, unleashing numerous scoring chances before the halftime whistle. Wizards manager Bob Gansler brought on regular starter Chris Klein to start the second half to try and pressure the Thunder defense. It was the Thunder who capitalized on a pressured defense, though. Menyongar sent a shot just wide of the left post, but on the way it struck defender Shavar Thomas’s foot, sending the ball past Hersmer and doubling the visitors lead. Four minutes later, Menyongar put the game under lock and key for Minnesota, scoring his second goal of the night. Kansas City finally got on the board with a Ryan Pore goal in the 71st minute, and all that was left for Minnesota was to withstand the Wizards attack in the final 15 minutes, and for the second year in a row, secure a semifinal spot for the USL First Division.

FC Dallas provided the drama of the quarterfinal round in Germantown, Maryland, drawing level in the final seconds of stoppage time and eventually out-dueling DC United on penalties. After playing the first 45 minutes to a scoreless draw, DC’s Christian Gomez put United ahead two minutes after the restart. Dallas went up a man when Dema Kovalenko was sent off following his second caution of the night. The Hoops pushed for an equalizer until the very end. Carlos Ruiz beat United defenders Bobby Boswell and Facundo Erpen on a solo run, finishing with a dramatic goal a mere seconds from the referee’s final whistle. In the penalty session, only one of the three DC United shooters converted, and Dallas scored on all four shots, with Abe Thompson finishing the dramatic comeback with the final kick.

After dispatching rival Chivas USA in the previous round, the Los Angeles Galaxy traveled to Spartan Stadium to face their other MLS rival, San Jose. Herculez Gomes lived up to his name, scoring twice for LA to give them a 2-0 lead at the half on nearly identical goals. For the first, Gomez received a header from Jovan Kirovski and beat Jon Conway to his right. For the second, Kirovski again found Gomez, who buried the shot past a diving Conway. the second goal came only minutes after San Jose’s Brad Davis was forced to come off due to a recurrence of a groin injury. Heading into halftime, play got quite physical, with four cautions issued in a span of 15 minutes. The Galaxy were reduced to 10 men at the 643rd minutes, when Todd Dunivant was sent off for his second caution of the night. The ’Quakes took advantage 13 minutes later, as Ronald Cerritos headed home a Brian Mullan cross to bring the home side within one. It turned out to be too little, too late, as the Galaxy held on in the final 15 minutes to leave San Jose with a semifinal date circled on it’s calendar.
