2007 Open Cup already underway
USASA teams in Wisconsin, Illinois claim regional berths
With the memory of the 2006 U.S. Open Cup final still fresh in the minds of soccer fans across the country, qualification for the 2007 edition of the tournament has begun in Wisconsin and Illinois.
Bavarian SC claimed a berth in next spring’s USASA Region II finals by beating city rival Milwaukee Kickers 2-0 in the Wisconsin final on Nov. 2 at the Valley Fields. Bavarian SC had a bye into the final, while the Kickers defeated 2006 Open Cup entry Croatian Eagles 2-1 on Oct. 25 at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee. Bavarian SC has made Open Cup appearances in 1999, 2000, 2003 and 2004, advancing to the third round in 2003.
South of the border in Illinois, RWB Adria slipped past HNK Zrinski 1-0 in an all-Croatian state final Nov. 8 at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Ill., the site of the 2006 U.S. Open Cup final. Adria broke the scoreless tie early in the second half, and held on as a late header by Zrinski’s Alexi Korol beat the goalkeeper, glanced off the crossbar and nearly bounced into the goal. Adria defeated Wisla SAC 2-0 and Zrinski knocked off the AAC Eagles 3-1 in the semifinals.
