USASA Region II qualifying
Eight-team tournament kicks off April 21
The USASA Region II qualifying tournament is set, with eight teams set to battle for two spots in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
The first-round draw was held online April 4, with the opening games slated for Saturday, April 21.
Milwaukee’s Bavarian SC (Wisconsin) and RWB Adria (Illinois) won their respective state titles last fall, while Lafayette Veracruz (Indiana) and Detroit United (Michigan) won this spring. AAFC Elite, the Michigan runner-up, also is in the field.
Two of the teams likely will be affected by the NCAA rule that bars college players from joining amateur teams until after May 1 -- the Des Moines Menace Reserves (Iowa) and the Princeton-56ers of the National Premier Soccer League.
The format after the first round is yet to be determined, but the regional final will be June 17 in St. Joseph, Mich. The regional will name its two representatives to the U.S. Open Cup in mid-May, and since there is no qualifying round in the tournament this year, the regional champion does not need to be determined before the event starts June 12.
