Danbury United from Connecticut advanced after winning in penalty kicks 6-5 over Emigrantes Das Ilhas of Rhode Island. The game finished as a scoreless draw at the end of regulation. In the extra frame, both teams traded goals and ended overtime tied at 1-1. The match went into penalty kicks where Danbury United clinched their first appearance in the U.S. Open Cup.
AC United is a merger of two clubs from Maryland. One of the clubs was Allied SC, who qualified for the Open Cup in 2004 and 2006. United were aiming to make thier third cup run in the last four years, but the Aegean Hawks would take advantage of some overly physical play. The Hawks were up 2-0 when the game completely changed in the 55th minute. They had controlled the majority of play throughout, but when one of the Hawks’ forwards was taken down while on a breakaway, AC United was shown a red card. Ten minutes later, a United player was given his second yellow card for a tackle from behind, leaving the Maryland side with only nine players. With the two-man advantage the Hawks added two more goals and punched their ticket to the U.S. Open Cup.
