Most cup followers were sure that Dallas clubs Roma and Azzurri would be the teams qualifying from the USASA’s Region III. Everyone but a contingent from Jacksonville, that is.
Last year’s Cinderella story of the U.S. Open Cup, Dallas Roma, will not get a chance to repeat that performance. Lynch’s Irish Pub, from Jacksonville, Florida beat Roma 4-0 in the final Group A game at the USASA Region III Finals in Fayetteville, North Carolina on Sunday. Both teams had beaten the other Group A team, Georgia’s Saturn FC. Lynch’s is the first Florida USASA team to qualify for the U.S. Open Cup since DS United in 2003, and will be making their Open Cup debut as well.
On Saturday, Azzurri, a rival of Roma’s in the North Texas Premier Soccer Association in Dallas, clinched the top spot in Group B with wins over South Carolina’s Death Penguins (4-1), and Louisiana’s Lake Charles Sting (6-1). Azzurri last appeared in the Open Cup in 2005, falling in the first round to, you guessed it, Roma FC.
Lynch’s and Azzurri will face each other in the final on Monday morning, to determine who will represent Region III at the USASA National Cup Finals in Seattle later this summer.
