2007 USASA Qualifying
Top two clubs from each region will advance
The qualifying process for the USASA is the longest in all levels of American soccer. Some regions begin the journey as early as the previous Fall season with other tournaments finishing right before the qualifying deadline. The top two clubs from each of the four regions will enter the Open Cup in the First Round on June 12.

Qualifying results from all four regions can be found on the right side of the page.

Tournament schedule / standings

With the missing team, the tournament is now down to one group of four and one group of three. Region III Cup Commissioner Kim Bowen explained why.

"Region III policy mandates that all players participating in the Region III National Cup Competition must have international clearances if applicable. Their roster contained players that required clearances and they were either not requested or not received in time for the players to participate and the team could not field a competitive team."

The winner of each group will qualify for the U.S. Open Cup and will square off in the Region III Open Cup Final on Monday at 9:00 a.m.

Blind draw on May 24 sets table for the weekend's tourney
The field for the Region III tournament is set and they will determine their two Open Cup entries during Memorial Day weekend. The tournament consists of eight teams, divided into two groups of four. Those teams will play a round robin format, and the winner of each group will qualify for the Open Cup. The Region III Open Cup championship will be played at 9:00am on Monday morning.

While the participants are already set, the groups are not. Region III uses a blind draw to determine their schedule.

"The original purpose of going to a blind draw was to prevent teams from dropping out of the competition, or not entering at all based on the schedule that was made at the mid-year meeting in October of the previous year," explains Region III Cup Commissioner Kim Bowen.

Two newcomers join the Open Cup
Region IV's Banat Arsenal and El Paso Indios USA qualify
Banat Arsenal from Arizona and El Paso Indios USA from the NPSL will be making their first trip to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup after winning their semifinal games on Saturday. Banat defeated the Sonoma County Sol 4-2. The Sol were attempting to qualify for the Open Cup for the third year in a row. The Arizona Sahuaros, who were aiming to make it two Open Cup appearances in a row, fell short of making it an all-Arizona final when they lost to Indios USA 3-1.

It doesn’t change anything about their qualification status, but on Sunday, Indios USA defeated Banat in the championship game 3-2. By winning the Region IV open cup championship, Indios USA earns a spot in the USASA National Cup finals with the winners of the other regions the weekend of August 3-5 in Seattle, WA.

The teams are divided into two groups of three (A & B), and a third group of four teams (C). Beginning on Thursday, May 17, groups A & B will play matches against each other, while Group C teams will play an inter-group schedule. The three group winners, plus the best second place team will advance to the semifinals on Saturday, May 19. A draw will be held to determine which group winner will play the non group winner in the semifinals.

In some respects, the Region IV tournament is doing well just to kick off on time. A combination of drought and overused city fields forced Region IV Cup Commissioner Mike Maloney to find a new location other than San Diego, the original site for the Region IV National Cups tournaments. After being turned down by numerous sites, Maloney finally found a site in Temecula, California, about midway between Los Angeles and San Diego. According to Maloney, the fields are more private, and will be good condition for play.

Baltimore Colts advance to Maryland final
USASA Region I releases qualifying bracket
The weather finally cooperated for the Maryland State Soccer Association, allowing the twice-delayed state quarterfinal and one of the semifinals to take place. Baltimore Colts FC punched their ticket to the final by defeating the Towson Ice 4-3. The Colts are hoping to qualify for the Open Cup for the second time in three years. In 2005, they fell in the first round to the Richmond Kickers Future of the PDL 3-0.

In the last remaining quarterfinal match, Baltimore Bays 89 shutout Maryland FC 2-0 to earn the right to play A.C. United. United and the Bays will square off on March 11 at a site to be determined, with the winner moving on to the state final against the Colts on March 25.

A.C. United were given a bye into the semifinals since they are a merger of Allied S.C., the team that earned one of the two Region I Open Cup spots last season, and a club called Christos SC.
