City Islanders win battle of unbeatens
Kings earn first win, Richmond adds to Wilmington's rough start
The Harrisburg City Islanders seem to be on their way to qualifying for the U.S. Open Cup for the first time after a 4-3 win over the previously unbeaten Charlotte Eagles. Tim Velton scored the game-winning goal in second half stoppage time to hand the Eagles their first loss of the season, and extending Harrisburg’s unbeaten streak to four games. Richmond, who has already qualified for the tournament as defending league champions, played spoiler against the Wilmington Hammerheads thanks to an 89th minute goal by Matt Watson to give the Kickers a 2-1 win. Wilmington are winless in their first three games of the season and are on the outside looking in after the weekend.
Another struggling club is the expansion Crystal Palace Baltimore who fell 1-0 to the Cincinnati Kings at home. Brett Jones scored a late game-winner for the Kings giving them their first win of the season. Crystal Palace has failed to earn a single point in their first three matches, and only have three matches remaining to right the ship. Next weekend, they will host the Richmond Kickers in a match where a loss could eliminate them from qualification. (Match report: Cincinnati / Baltimore)
In other action, New Hampshire and Western Mass played to a 1-1 draw. Almir Barbosa scored a first half goal for the Phantoms while Jay Willis equalized just after halftime for the Pioneers.
