Eagles, Pioneers "back in" the Open Cup
Four teams left to battle for two spots next weekend
In a battle of USL-2 heavyweights, the Richmond Kickers got by the Charlotte Eagles 1-0, on a 74th minute goal from Nowaf Jaman. The Eagles started quickly, as Adam Ruud and Dan Harvey both had good scoring chances in the first ten minutes. Momentum turned the Kickers way later in the first half. Eagles goalkeeper Dan Benton stopped a 40-yard volley from Evan Harding, which came from a rebound off Mike Burke’s free kick attempt in the 38th minute. In the final minute of the half, Matt Watson’s header from the penalty spot went just over the crossbar. After more back and forth action, Nowaf Jaman broke though in the 74th minute for Richmond. Burke found a wide-open Jaman, who struck on a left-footed strike from 12 yards out. Richmond Match report
Western Mass played to a 0-0 draw at Harrisburg on Saturday, and the two clubs picked up where they left off the week before. Last weekend in Ludlow, Massachusetts, the two teams combined for 41 fouls, 11 yellow cards, and four ejections. In "Round 2", the teams managed 44 fouls between them, but "only" eight yellows. The hosts nearly took all three points on a couple occasions. In the 54th minute, David Schofield received a give and go combo from Jani Galik and beat Pioneers goalkeeper Kevin Trapp, but the ball went just past the post. Near the end of the game, Matt Tanzini made a pass to Adam Clay while fighting for a ball on the ground inside the penalty area. Clay blasted a low shot into Trapp and out of play. The red-hot Cleveland City Stars made qualifying for the cup more difficult for the New Hampshire Phantoms, with a thrilling 3-2 victory in the Stars’ home opener. Scottish import Adam Moffat gave Cleveland a 1-0 lead after a quarter-hour, on an assist from Mark Schulte. Moffit assisted last week’s two-goal hero, Nigel Codrington, on a goal seven minutes later for a 2-0 lead. Less than ten minutes after the re-start, New Hampshire netted their first goal, as Tiago Lopes sent a shot just past the outstretched hands of goalkeeper Caleb Patterson. The Phantoms drew level with just eight minutes remaining. Narcisco Fernandes chipped a shot over the head of Patterson, who has drawn off his line. Just as the visitors appeared to escape Cleveland with a point, Adam Moffat struck again. In the final minute of stoppage time, Moffat found the ball at his feet after a melee in the penalty area, and made no mistake in pounding the ball home to give Cleveland City a heart-stopping victory.
Crystal Palace Baltimore pulled themselves right back into the Open Cup race with a 3-0 thrashing of Wilmington. Sergio Flores opened the scoring for CPB in the 11th minute, off an assist from Matthew Mbuta. Mbuta helped out again in the 48th minute, this time assisting Andrew Marshall for a 2-0 lead. The icing on the cake came in the 90th minute, when Josh Alcala netted the third goal of the night for the visitors.
