King-size comeback clinches for Cincy
Hammerheads on the brink after blowing 2-0 lead in final minutes
The Cincinnati Kings have never missed the cut for the U.S. Open Cup in their short history, and they kept that streak alive on Thursday night. The Kings qualified for the Open Cup for the third year in a row with a dramatic 2-2 draw with the Wilmington Hammerheads at the Town and County Soccer Complex.
The Hammerheads seemed like they were on their way to sneaking into the Open Cup again when they went up 2-0 thanks to goals by Ross McKenzie and Jamie Holmes in the 75th and 79th minute, respectively. With a win, the Hammerheads would have leaped over Crystal Palace Baltimore for the sixth and final qualifying spot. However, it wasn’t to be as David Horne cut the lead in half in the 87th minute, followed by the equalizer by second half substitute Bret Jones in the dying seconds of stoppage time.
This weekend’s Second Division action will be intense as three teams (Wilmington, Crystal Palace Baltimore and the New Hampshire Phantoms are fighting for the final spot. Wilmington travels to unbeaten Cleveland, while Baltimore will play at Richmond. New Hampshire is only one of the three playing at home, but they have to face the Charlotte Eagles.
