West is packed after Sunday's PDL games
Wheeler scores four for unbeaten Piranhas
The PDL Western Conference qualifying picture didn’t get much clearer after Sunday’s matches. The Spokane Spiders, San Jose Frogs and the Fresno Fuego all picked up their second wins, leaving five teams at the top of the standings tied with six points.
Jake Moug scored two first half goals to lead the Spiders to a 2-1 win over the Cascade Surge. The Frogs remain perfect in league play (3-0-0), and in qualifying (2-0-0) after a 2-1 win over the previous unbeaten Ventura County Fusion (2-1-0). Fresno was awarded three penalty kicks in the first half and converted all of them on the way to a 5-2 win over the San Francisco Seals. Pablo Campos scored a hat trick (two of them from the penalty spot), and Amaury Nunez scored a pair (one from the spot).
In the Eastern Conference, Andrew Wheeler scored all four goals in Hampton Roads’ 4-0 win over the Northern Virginia Royals. It’s still early, but the Piranhas are sitting in first place in the conference with two road games yet to play.
Justin Cook scored the game-winner in second half stoppage time to give the Central Florida Kraze a 3-2 win over the Palm Beach Pumas. The Kraze join the El Paso Patriots on top of the Southern Conference table as the only two teams with a 2-0-0 record.
The St. Louis Lions handed the Colorado Rapids U-23s their second loss in qualifying by a score of 3-1. The Central Conference isn't really in full swing yet, but in the early going, the Lions are one of three teams to win their first game.
