BYU and Central Florida added their names to the list of PDL clubs in the 2007 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
With a 3-1 victory against Spokane, BYU avoided having their return trip to the cup lost in a tangle of tiebreakers. If the game had ended in a draw, the Cougars would have found themselves in a three-way tie for first with Spokane and Tacoma, and possible a four way tie with a win from Yakima. Instead, BYU move past Tacoma for first with nine points, while rendering Yakima’s 1-0 win over Ogden meaningless, as far as qualification goes. It is the second year in a row BYU has qualified for the Cup. Last year the Cougars fell to the USASA’s Arizona Sahuaros 5-1.
The Central Florida Kraze clinched their Open Cup spot the same way Long Island did last night, off the field. With Central Florida’s qualifying finished, and sitting at 3-1, they needed a draw between Carolina and Atlanta, or else the winner of that match would jump over the Kraze and into the Cup. Despite out shooting the U23 Silverbacks 18-3, Carolina could not find the back of the net, and the match ended in a 0-0 draw, sending Central Florida to the Open Cup for the first time since 2000, when they lost to USASA club Uruguay SC 1-0 in the opening round.
In the Central Division, two teams were eliminated from qualifying on Saturday, setting up two all-or-nothing showdowns. the Michigan Bucks thrashed the Chicago Fire Premier 4-0, setting up a qualifying showdown on Memorial Day with the Indiana Invaders to decide the Great Lakes Open Cup spot. In Kansas City, the Brass defeated the Springfield Demize 1-0, setting up another elimination game for the Heartland bid on Sunday at St. Louis.
In the Eastern Conference, Long Island finished their qualifying run with a 4-0 record, defeating Vermont 1-0. Long Island had qualified the day before when Cape Cod and Vermont played to a 1-1 draw. With their 3-0 victory over the Virginia Legacy, the Hampton Roads Piranhas achieved a rather unique feat. They became the only team in this year’s PDL qualifying run to not concede a goal though their four games. The Piranhas 0-0 draw vs. Reading, combined with Ocean City’s perfect 4-0 finish, kept the club out of the Open Cup however. Fredericksburg has also not allowed a goal, and have two games yet to play.
