Bucks deny the Invaders once again
Michigan claims final spot in 40-team field with 3-3 draw
If only the Indiana Invaders could avoid the Michigan Bucks, they just might make the U.S. Open Cup one of these days.
Once again, the Bucks denied Indiana an Open Cup trip, in what has become an almost annual occurrence, with a wild 3-3 draw in South Bend, Indiana. In a mad scramble to clear the ball off off their line, Michigan’s Ty Shipalane knocked the ball into his own net, though credit eventually went to Indiana’s Saidi Isaac. The goal was the first allowed by Michigan dating back to last year’s PDL Championship game, a span of 378 minutes.
After the restart, the two teams scored three goals in a span of fifteen minutes. Isaac added his second goal at the fifty minute mark. Michigan then struck twice through Kenny Uzoigwe. The first goal came from a header off a corner kick from Nate Jafta in the 59th minute, soon followed by an almost identical play involving the same players, two minutes later.
With the score tied and the clock winding down, it was time for Uzoigwe to play helper, assisting Khelli Dube on his team-leading fifth goal of the season to give the Bucks a 3-2 lead. In the 81st minute, Isaac completed his hat trick after a scramble in the box, but it turned out the be the final goal of the match. Michigan becomes the final team to add their name to the list of forty who will compete for this year’s Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup which kicks off Tuesday, June 12.
