St. Louis' Busch Soccer Club won the 1988 U.S. Open Cup, defeating Greek American A.C.
2-1 in extra time. The San Francisco club struck first on Michael Deleroy's goal in the 35th
minute. Deleroy headed in a pass from Jan Elberse, sending the shot past Busch goalkeeper
Jeff Robben. The score stayed 1-0 until the 71st minute, when Pat Olwig recovered a ball
lost by teammate Greg Makowski, and beat Aram Kardzair with a line drive shot. Greek American
had a chance to win at the end of regulation, but both Michael Nieto and Harris Opara missed shots
while Busch GK Robben was down and out of the play.
In the first extra period, Mike Twellman nearly won it for Busch, but his shot was kicked away
at the goalline by Opara. Busch finally found the winning goal six minutes from the end of the
second extra period. Dan Musenfecher send a cross from deep in the left corner, and John Hayes,
who had attended his brothers wedding earlier in the day, let the ball deflect off his chest, and
past Kardzair.
