One time champions take another shot at the final

For FC Dallas this is the first time the bull has made it to the US Open Cup final, but for the flaming horse he already won the Dewer Cup in 1997 defeating then defending champion DC United as the Dallas Burn. The Los Angeles Galaxy defeated the New England Revolution in the 2001 final, but couldn’t beat the Columbus Crew in 2002 as a repeat champion.

For the first time since the Chicago Fire became a three time champion FC Dallas will try to bring back the US Open Cup championship to the Lone Star State. Ronnie O’Brien’s 20th minute goal was all FC Dallas needed to hold off the Chicago Fire along with some strong keeping by Scott Garlick. Stopping all four shots by Chicago to get the clean sheet and the victory, but with victory often there is a price to pay as Simo Valakari got booked in the 16th minute and ejected in the 44th minute. So FC Dallas will be missing the scrappy Finnish midfielder.

For the L.A. Galaxy this will be a 2nd attempt for them to be a two time champion. Defeating New England in 2001, but their attempt to go back to back was a disappointment in Columbus losing to the Crew by a goal. For Landon Donovan he lead the charge in the 29th minute for the Galaxy and Herculez Gomez registered two goals in this match and with enough firepower knocked out the USL-1st Division side Minnesota Thunder out of the Cup. John Menyongar tried to slice the deficit in half in the 54th minute, but once again the Galaxy with too much firepower and they would move on to their third US Open Cup Final. Chad Dombrowski finished the scoring sheet with a consolation prize in the 85th minute at the Home Depot Center.

Wednesday, September 28th at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California the Los Angeles Galaxy will host FC Dallas for the right become the country’s national champion of US Soccer. For the 2nd consecutive season the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup will be see on Gol TV and this will be the ultimate revenge for Carlos Ruiz as he faces his former side who sent him away to the Lone Star State for the return to MLS US international Landon Donovan. You couldn’t write a better script for US Soccer, MLS & all Supporters of this game. I encourage everyone to go to the pubs, tivo it at your house or get US Open Cup watch parties and see who will bring home the silverware that night.
