Opening Weekend of US Open Cup Qualifying
The first match of US Open Cup Qualifying weekend will have the Charlotte Eagles hosting the Northern Virginia Royals and on Saturday April 16th the new expansion club Cincinnati Kings against the Harrisburg City Islanders & Wilmington Hammerheads hosting the Northern Va. Royals.
Once MLS opens up with their national televised game we all know that the USL isn’t that far behind as well with US Open Cup Qualifying. All the different scenarios of qualifying and all the goal scoring as well as counting and adding up points to see who will take one of the top six spots in the Qualifying Table.
Yes there should be no qualifying at all, but for that to happen, please read my other article in my column and you will see why it will work. But there is some excitement with US Open Cup Qualifying. All the possible close calls when you have a regular season match doubles up as an USOC Qualifier. Sadly there is double Jeopardy involved, but sometimes even in football a certain bounce can be cruel and punishing if it misses the post or goes in the net past the keeper. But I think this will put an extra spring in their step because you are playing for not only the USL 2nd Division championship, but also have the right to participate in the 2nd oldest football FA Cup championship in the world.
We are all happy when April comes around in the US Football calendar, because it’s the start of the season as well as the start of US Open Cup Qualifying. Put the ball down in the center circle, blow the whistle referee and let’s kick this off the right way.
