After failing to qualify last season, Real Salt Lake took a step toward returning to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with a convincing 4-0 win over the San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday night.

The two teams celebrated the end of the month of April with a snow storm in Salt Lake City. It was the first Major League Soccer (MLS) play-in game for 2008, with RSL moving on to play at the Columbus Crew on May 27.

Kyle Beckerman, one of the few regular starters on the field for either team, led the way, scoring the first two goals of the game in the first half. Less than a minute after the second strike by Beckerman, Yura Movsisyan made it 3-0 thanks to an assist by Matias Cordoba. Andy Williams added insult to injury with a fourth goal in the 90th minute.

Prior to the game, an article was posted on Major League Soccer’s official website, revealing the play-in matches for qualification into the U.S. Open Cup.

As mentioned, Real Salt Lake, by defeating San Jose will trave to Columbus to take on the Crew on May 27. The winner of that match will play the Chicago Fire at Toyota Park at a date to be determined, for the right to enter the U.S. Open Cup in the Third Round.

It will be an Open Cup qualifying doubleheader on May 27 as the Colorado Rapids will take on the Los Angeles Galaxy, with a 10:30 p.m. Eastern Time kickoff. The winner of that match will play the Kansas City Wizards with a spot in the Open Cup on the line.

U.S. Soccer has yet to release the full U.S. Open Cup format.
