Monarchs, Freedoms close out 1st round tonight
Postponed match begins at 8:00 p.m. at the Maryland Soccerplex, winner plays at Carolina RailHawks in round 2
Tuesday night’s only postponed match is scheduled to be played tonight at the Maryland Soccerplex in the town of Boyds. The New York Pancyprian Freedoms, qualifiers out of Region I of the USASA, will square off with the hosts, the Real Maryland Monarchs of the USL Second Division.
The original match was postponed due to lightning.
Perhaps the most notable player on the Real Maryland roster is El Salvadoran international Ronald Cerritos. Cerritos scored 70 goals in his 10-year MLS career, as well as seven for El Salvador. Cerritos returned to the United States after two seasons with San Salvador FC in his native country.
Both teams have a busy weekend to look forward to. The Freedoms face Central Park Rangers in a semifinal playoff match in the Cosmopolitan Soccer League, and then on June 22 will face Boston Olympiakos for the USASA Region I Open Cup championship. This past weekend the Freedoms captured their third straight Manning Cup (NY State Cup) with a 1-0 win over New York Athletic Club.
Real Maryland have to play back-to-back games. After tonight’s match, they will travel to Harrisburg to take on the City Islanders in league play on Saturday.
