ROAD TO THE QUARTERFINALS
Wilmington started their Open Cup tournament with a 2-0 win over their chief USL-2 rivals, the Charlotte Eagles, but didn’t find the winning goals until the end of the game. Jamie Watson scored in the 82nd minute, and Phil Hufstader added the insurance goal eight minutes later.
The Hammerheads second round match was easily their most dramatic thus far. After finishing regulation tied 1-1 with the USL-1 Carolina RailHawks, both teams scored in the first overtime session to make it 2-2. Carolina’s Gavin Glinton scored with two minutes remaining in extra time, but Wilmington’s Kenny Bundy tied the game again with a goal in stoppage time, and the Hammerheads went on to win the penalty kick shootout.
In the third round, it was Kenny Bundy yet again. This time his goal came in the first half against the Chicago Fire, and Wilmington held on to defeat an MLS club for just the second time in their history.
Rochester nearly saw their tournament end with their very first match. The Rhinos needed a 90th minute goal from Tai Atieno to send their match with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds to extra time, and eventually to a penalty kick tiebreaker.
In the second round, the Rhinos needed extra time to dispatch the Cleveland City Stars 2-1. Once again Rochester tied the match late (Ryan Heins 82’), but Kenny Bertz scored in extra time to avoid the penalty shootout.
It was back to penalty kicks in the Rhino’s third round game against the Columbus Crew. After taking a 1-0 lead in the first half through Ty Harden, Columbus leveled the score just minutes later, and the score stood through full time and extra time. Rochester went on to convert all five of their penalty kicks, while Duncan Oughton, the Crew goal scorer, was the only Crew player to fail to convert.
DID YOU KNOW
Rochester has faced a USL-2 team in Open Cup play four years in a row. The Rhinos defeated New Hampshire (2006), Western Mass (2007) and Pittsburgh (2008 & 2009). Their only other USL-2 opponent was Western Mass in 1998.
Rochester has become only the second team in the Pro Era to advance on penalty kicks in at least two of their matches, the other being Charleston in 2008. Four other teams (D.C. United (1997), San Jose Earthquakes (2001), Crystal Palace Baltimore (2008), Seattle Sounders (2008)) have had two matches go to penalties, but lost the second match each time.

ROAD TO THE QUARTERFINALS
Charleston began with a 2-0 win over USASA club Atlanta F.C.. Randi Patterson and Tsuyoshi Yoshitake scored the Battery goals, while Atlanta finished the match with eight men after three players were sent off in the second half.
Charleston traveled to Miami for their second round match versus Miami F.C., and came away with a 1-0 victory on the strength of Tyler Hemming’s penalty kick goal in the 65th minute.
In their third round game against MLS club Chivas USA, it was Patterson and Yoshitake again providing the scoring in the 3-1 win. Patterson scored twice in the second half, and Yoshitake added a goal at the end of the game.
Houston earned a quarterfinal berth by upending the Austin Aztex of the USL First Division 2-0. Corey Ashe opened the scoring in the 71st minute, and assisted on Dominic Oduro’s 90th minute goal to clinch the win.
DID YOU KNOW
With their 3-1 Third Round win over Chivas USA, Charleston became the first non-MLS club to reach the Quarterfinals three years in a row in the Professional Era (1995-present).
PREVIOUS MEETINGS
These teams certainly have history with each other, having met the last two Open Cup tournaments and some exhibition games. Overall, Charleston has been on top for the more important games they have played.
The first Open Cup match was in the 2007 Third Round, won by the Battery on a Stephen Armstrong goal in extra time at Charleston’s Blackbaud Stadium.
The 2008 match, also in the Third Round and again at Blackbaud, was a bit tighter. With Charleston ahead 1-0 on a 31st minute Marco Reda goal, Houston tied the game in the 89th minute through Stephen Wondolowski. After playing a scoreless extra time, Chalreston advanced by winning the penalty shootout 4-3.
In 2006 and 2007, Houston participated in the preseason Carolina Challenge Cup, hosted by the Battery. The Dynamo defeated Charleston 1-0 in the 2006 tournament, and drew 1-1 in 2007. Houston won both tournaments they were involved in.

Harrisburg began their journey with a 4-1 win over the Reading Rage of the PDL. Chad Severs assisted on the opening goal from Steve Fisher, and scored the final goal on a penalty kick in the second half.
The City Islanders needed penalty kicks in the second round. After a 0-0 draw with the Western Pass Pioneers, Harrisburg prevailed in the shootout tiebreaker 4-3.
In the third round, Harrisburg took out a depleted New England Revolution 2-1 in extra time. Two Revs players left the game with injuries in the second half and in extra time, but New England had used all of its subs by then and were forced to play shorthanded. Geoff Bloes scored the eventual game winning goal in the 105th minute.
D.C. United’s lone cup game against the Ocean City Barons of the PDL turned out to be tougher then they expected. Fielding a lineup with mostly bench players, D.C. was forced to bring in a few starters as reinforcements in the second half. Two of those subs, Christian Gomez and Ange N’Silu, scored both of D.C. goals to put an end to the upset scare.
DID YOU KNOW
Stretching back to last year’s Open Cup, D.C. has scored two or more goals in five straight Open Cup matches.
PREVIOUS MEETINGS
Needing a bigger stadium to host D.C. United, the City Islanders moved their Third Round game in 2007 from City Island in Harrisburg to Hempfield High School in Landisville, PA. On that day, the City Islanders, in their first Open Cup appearance, defeated D.C.United 1-0. It was the first time that D.C. United was defeated by a USL team at any level in the Open Cup. Steve Fisher scored the game-winning goal in the 44th minute and goalkeeper Matt Nelson earned the shutout for the hosts.
OPEN CUP HISTORY

Overall: 21-7-3 (PK: 1-2), 63 GF 28 GA

The two-time Open Cup winning D.C. United have made a reputation of going deep in the Open Cup. Six of their 11 appearances have ended in either the Semifinals or the Final. D.C. United have only dropped three Open Cup games to lower division opponents, all three times (1999, 2004 & 2007) they were the only occasions they exited the tournament after one match.

ROAD TO THE QUARTERFINALS
Both clubs only played one game to reach the final eight. Kansas City, coming off three SuperLiga games in eight days, managed to get by the Minnesota Thunder on penaltry kicks after a 3-3 draw. The Wizards took an early 2-0 lead, but saw it slip away on a pair of penalty kicks from Ricardo Sanchez. Each team scored in extra time, but Kansas City converted all four of their penalty attempts, while Minnesota had two of theirs saved.
Seattle faced their longtime rivals the Portland Timbers in front of over 16,000 fans at Portland’s PGE Park. The Sounders sent the Rose City supporters home disappointed by pulling out a 2-1 win. Roger Levesque and Stephen King scored in the first half to give the MLS club a 2-0 lead, but Portland’s Mandjou Keita made it 2-1 before halftime.
PREVIOUS MEETINGS
The teams met early in the current MLS season on April 11. Kansas City came out on top 1-0 on a Davy Arnaud goal in the 80th minute. It was Seattle’s first loss of the season, after winning their first three matches.
