The Harrisburg City Islanders earned a rematch with the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer by defeating the Western Mass Pioneers on penalty kicks after as 0-0 draw.
Both teams played to a 0-0 draw after 90 minutes of normal time and 30 minutes of extra time. Western Mass held on for the scoreless draw despite being out shot 15-6 over the 120 minutes. Both teams had good scoring chances denied by the woodwork in the extra session. The Pioneers Federico Molinari and Yan Klukowsk each struck the left post, and Harrisburg’s Brandon Swartzendruber’s shot went off the crossbar late in extra time.
After both teams converted their first penalty attempt, Weston Mass goalkeeper James Thorpe saved attempts from Nate Baker and Tim Velten. This only kept the count even at 1-1, as Klukowski and Almir Barbosa both missed their attempts. After both teams were good with their next two kicks, the tiebreaker moved to sudden death. Swartzendruber made good on his kick for the City Isles, while David Tyrie sent his kick wide right, sending Harrisburg to the third round.
Harrisburg faced New England in the 2007 Quarterfinals at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough. Mass., and fell 2-1. The rematch will be at New Britain, Connecticut on June 30, with the wijner advancing to the Quarterfinals.
